What are some of the high throughput and efficient ciphers? I know AES has generally good performance, but is there anything more efficient that it now?

I would like to perform small performance test and want to select several ciphers. I would like to consider both block and stream ciphers. Some that I have selected so far are twofish, three fish, serpent, salsa20, trivium and few others from eSTREAM contest. Twofish and serpent is probably slower than AES from what I saw before (through twofish comes close to AES). I read that salsa20 can be relatively fast.

I don't think any block cipher implemented in software can really compete with a hardware-accelerated implementation. And since AFAIK AES is the only cipher which has hardware implementations in consumer processors... otherwise Threefish is pretty fast on modern 64-bit processors, clocking at just over 6 cpb which is rather competitive (but there are yet faster ciphers). And it is not a standard cipher, even though "Bruce made it" :p –  Thomas Sep 27 '13 at 9:23

Serpent is much slower than AES in software but is faster in hardware designs. Twofish is quite fast in software, but not nearly as fast as hardware accelerated AES. Also Twofish and Serpent round performance is independent of key size, AES is not. Salsa is quite fast in its 12 round implementation. –  Richie Frame Sep 27 '13 at 10:01
Salsa20 and its successor ChaCha are pretty popular. At least among those cryptoprogrammers I know, so it might only be popular in that particular circle. AES with AES-NI instructions is quite fast. Without AES-NI instructions Salsa20/ChaCha will be significantly faster, especially in round reduced versions. –  CodesInChaos Sep 27 '13 at 10:56
