I am trying to figure out what the salting mechanisms are for various kinds of encryptions in Heimdal Kerberos. In section "4.11 Encryption types and salting" of the Heimdal Kerberos documentation it says, in part,

pw-salt uses the default salt for each encryption type is specified for. If the encryption type `etype' isn't given, all default encryption will be used.

However, I cannot find the "default salt for each encryption type is specified for". For example, can someone point me to some document which specifies the default salt for aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96?

Are you sure it's 'aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96'? That string doesn't actually specify a block cipher mode of operation, which seems off. –  pg1989 Oct 25 '13 at 18:57
