I have the following ciphertext:

w jaoot zhoipqjwp ql wee lro oawxaop

I know it is a substitution cipher but using my frequency analysis skills does not help me to find the plaintext.

I think the first letter represents an "a" but how do I know this is a monoalphabetic cipher and not a polalphabetic cipher as the Vigenere cipher for exmaple?

With such a short ciphertext it hard to say exactly if it is monoalphabetic or not. Digrams and trigrams are usually used for that. –  mikeazo Jan 16 at 19:06

Assuming English plaintext and that the spaces are accurate, if your assumption is correct, 'wee' would then become a word like 'all' or 'app'. "ql" and "lro" both share an "L" (it/the, to/our). You have two digraphs in the ciphertext, so I'd examine those first. The letters 'ql wee lro" also appear elsewhere, so play around with letter frequencies, and you should be on your way.

To answer your question, though, this looks to me like a monoalphabetic substitution cipher. (Though, as pointed out, it's hard to tell for sure with such a short ciphertext)
