A pseudorandom generator (PRG) maps a random seed to a long pseudorandom stream and is the model for stream ciphers where a secret key is used to generate a long keystream. Not to be confused with pseudorandom function families (PRF, ) or pseudorandom number generators (PRNG, see ).

Most modern stream ciphers include a nonce and may more accurately described as a pseudorandom function family (PRF).
