comment What is the best way to put a backdoor in an encryption system?
@EdwardBowles, I do want to know how to break these ciphers, as part of knowing how there backdoors (weaknesses) might work. However, not very many encryption algorithms are designed to have backdoors, since they avoid methods that would make them susceptible to these reductions. Instead, they seem to make the encryption system as hard as possible to not allow anyone to break it. However, I am interested in knowing how you might be able to reduce some ciphers if you know a trick to it. I think I need to rewrite some of my question.

@mikeazo, Yes, Schneier's paper does provide some insight into cryptanalysis, by means of exposing progressively harder ciphers and methods to break them. This, I think, provides a level of understanding to go back and find weakness in ciphers and how to take advantage of weaknesses. However, it still appears more of an art to me rather then a science. Also, there seems to be plenty of research on how to avoid nothing up my sleeve numbers (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing_up_my_sleeve_number) -- but very little on how to implement and exploit them.

@mikeazo, The question (crypto.stackexchange.com/q/675/706) is more theory for a certain encryption scheme. They seem to be asking if a certain case would ever occur with an encryption. I am more concerned with a set of examples, which you could use to learn differential and linear cryptanalysis.

My goal is to create encryption systems that have backdoors, so that I can practice detecting them and break them. I have no desire to implement anything that would be used to protected real information. Instead, I want to use a weak encryption on bogus data and then try and go back and break it. An analogy to system administrators, you practice playing the role of an attacker to better know how to defend your own system. Hence, I would like to know what didn't work and why, so that I can go back and learn from it by practicing the techniques that broke the encryption algorithm.
