The problem may be that prime multiplication (and finding primes in the first place) is something that's "hard" to do electromechanically. Yes, Babbage's analytical machine may be Turing-complete, but I'm talking about something that you can build in your garage. Maybe a different set of one-way functions could be used for generating keys, e.g. a physical implementations of the Knapsack problem?

Okay, I should have added "that would have been of real-world use". I'm sure some hobbyist must have thought about how to construct something like this in a garage already, but I couldn't find anything online.
