so I am trying to crack a shadow file with john the ripper. İt has a total of 4 hashes and first I ran it through a wordlist which cracked 1 password. But the password it found doesn't work for the user. Any ideas on why and also can I run the hashes through other hash crackers that will be more reliable and fast?

  • $\begingroup$ I'm guessing that it is more important to find out why the password didn't match first. Tool related questions are off topic here unless they are targeting specific cryptographic techniques. Which one is more reliable is not, and it is opinionated as well. $\endgroup$ – Maarten Bodewes Aug 13 at 8:39
